Every country has its own legislation regarding abortion. In the case of Mexico, the topic has been debated for over 70 years, and fortunately, the rules surrounding this issue have been changing along this time. Today, we will discuss legal abortion in Mexico.

Currently, there are 11 states in Mexico where abortion is legal. Since 2019, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) declared that anyone can be punished for having an abortion in any of the states of the Mexican Republic.

Since 2007, voluntary abortion was approved and legalized in Mexico City. From there, the fight continued, and it took another 12 years to achieve a new milestone: in 2019, abortion was decriminalized in Oaxaca. Since then, legal interruption of pregnancy has become a reality in other states.

Nowadays, the states that guarantee the right to decide voluntarily, freely, and safely are: Mexico City, Baja California Norte, Baja California Sur, Oaxaca, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Colima, Guerrero, and Sinaloa.
